The South African Transport and Allied Workers Union (SATAWU) expresses deep disappointment over the Passenger Rail Agency of South Africa’s (PRASA) failure to implement the 2025/2026 financial year wage agreement.
Following intense negotiations and the intervention of the Commission for Conciliation, Mediation and Arbitration (CCMA), SATAWU and PRASA signed a binding agreement on 24 July 2025. The agreement included a 5.5% wage increment, effective August 2025, with back pay to be disbursed in September 2025.
However, on 12 August 2025, SATAWU received formal communication from PRASA stating that the entity will not comply with the collective agreement. This decision undermines the spirit of negotiation and is viewed by SATAWU as a direct attack on labour rights and an insult to both unionised and unorganised workers at PRASA.
“This confirms what SATAWU has been saying all along—PRASA is plagued by maladministration, corruption, lack of accountability, and mismanagement,” said the General Secretary of SATAWU.
SATAWU calls on PRASA to honour its commitments and urges government oversight bodies to intervene and hold the agency accountable.
