South African Transport and Allied Workers Union (SATAWU) is the largest and most comprehensive national trade union movement representing the trucking industry. Since our formation through a merger in 2000, we have consistently leveraged our membership strength—even under the challenging conditions of COVID-19 and widespread retrenchments—to defend workers’ rights and promote sustainability, competitiveness, and development.

SATAWU proudly represents thousands of workers in the Road Freight and Logistics Sector, a vital backbone of South Africa’s economy. Over the years, this sector has undergone significant restructuring and revival, driven by our commitment to negotiating improved wages, working conditions, and benefits.

We recognised that many employees—especially truck drivers—faced unfavourable employment terms and were increasingly vulnerable due to non-compliance with labour legislation and complex legal processes. These challenges were compounded by a lack of adequate training and awareness. SATAWU has worked tirelessly to address these gaps, ensuring that workers are empowered, protected, and fairly treated in accordance with South Africa’s labour laws.

Who We Represent

Road Freight workers are represented by SATAWU’s National Sector Coordinator (NSC), supported by Provincial Sector Coordinators across all nine provinces. These leaders advocate for workers’ rights, negotiate with employers, and ensure fair treatment across the sector.

Truck Drivers

Truck drivers play a critical role in South Africa’s economy, ensuring the timely delivery of goods across cities, provinces, and borders. Represented by SATAWU, these workers face long hours, tough conditions, and increasing pressure from employers and the industry

Fork Lift Operator

Forklift operators are essential to the smooth operation of warehouses, distribution centres, and freight terminals. They handle the loading and unloading of goods, ensuring safe and efficient movement of cargo. They deserve recognition, respect & strong representation

Dispatch & Logistics

Dispatch and logistics workers are the planners and coordinators behind every successful freight movement. They manage routes, schedules, cargo tracking, and communication between drivers and clients — ensuring that goods arrive safely and on time.

Courier Delivery

Courier and express delivery workers are the fast-moving force behind South Africa’s growing e-commerce and logistics industries. From parcel drivers to sorting staff, these workers ensure timely and secure delivery of goods to homes and businesses.

What SATAWU Is Doing in Road Freight

Our developed strategic intervention and strategic facilitated plan, aimed @ driving growth through an executable plan, is observed through the implementation of national awareness, retention and recruitment programmes, which have been continuously rolled out nationally across all Provinces to ensure unmatched services aimed at achieving and realising growth within the Road Freight and Logistics Sector, which represents 8000 plus and affiliated Companies.
