The South African Transport and Allied Workers Union (SATAWU) is deeply concerned about the growing violence in the taxi industry across South Africa. What started as isolated incidents has now become a national crisis. Killings, threats, and disruptions are affecting commuters daily. Tragically, many lives have been lost—including innocent passengers.
📅 Ekurhuleni Taxi Strike: 29 August 2025
On 28 August 2025, SANTACO Ekurhuleni announced a taxi strike. The next day, thousands of commuters were stranded. Many missed work, job interviews, and access to essential services. This led to “no work, no pay” consequences, especially for the poor and unemployed.
The strike followed actions by the Gauteng Transport Inspectorate, which impounded 16 taxis for being unroadworthy or operating illegally.
⚖️ SATAWU’s Position
While SATAWU respects the law, we are alarmed by the impact on:
- Public safety
- Commuter access
- Transport workers
We are also concerned about intimidation in the E-hailing industry. Drivers and passengers are increasingly unsafe. This must stop.
💬 Call for Dialogue and Safety
SANTACO has requested government subsidies, citing financial difficulties. SATAWU believes in constructive engagement between the government and taxi associations. A long-term solution is needed—one that protects the poor and working class and ends the violence.
🚌 Bus Sector Not Involved
SATAWU clarifies that:
- Our bus passenger sector members are not part of the strike
- Bus services continue as normal
- We are working with law enforcement to protect drivers and commuters
We are not suggesting any violent intent. But we must act responsibly to ensure safety. SANTACO has warned that the strike may spread, and we are concerned about our members—many of whom have faced attacks in past unrest.
