The South African Transport and Allied Workers Union (SATAWU) strongly condemns the misleading and irresponsible statement issued by the United National Transport Union (UNTU), which falsely accuses SATAWU of interfering in Transnet’s tender processes.

No Interference in Transnet Tenders

SATAWU is a law-abiding union that respects due process. We categorically deny any involvement in Transnet’s internal operations or tender awards. These allegations, based on comments by Pepi Silinga, are baseless and deliberately misleading.

SATAWU’s Track Record: Fighting Corruption and Mismanagement

SATAWU has consistently exposed:

  • Maladministration
  • Corruption
  • Irregular appointments
  • Mismanagement within Transnet

We remain committed to transparency and accountability in the public sector.

Legal Action and March Certificate Secured

SATAWU has obtained a certificate to march against Pepi Silinga and his alleged corrupt associates. However, as a disciplined and principled organisation, we have chosen to pursue legal avenues. Our legal team has engaged:

  • The Minister of Public Enterprises
  • Transnet’s Board
  • Relevant stakeholders

We challenge Silinga to present his evidence in court, not through media propaganda.

UNTU’s History of Betraying Workers

UNTU’s credibility is questionable. In 2022, they signed a 5.5% wage agreement that SATAWU opposed—clearly siding with management over workers. Today, they continue to defend Transnet’s leadership while neglecting their own members.

SATAWU Led the Call for Silinga’s Dismissal

SATAWU was the first and only union to demand Pepi Silinga’s removal. UNTU remained silent until the Special Investigating Unit (SIU) launched an investigation—an investigation triggered by SATAWU’s persistent pressure.

UNTU’s Sudden Involvement: A Publicity Stunt

UNTU’s recent actions appear opportunistic. If they truly cared about corruption at Transnet, why were they silent until now? Their involvement is a publicity stunt, undermining the struggles of the working class.

SATAWU’s Commitment to Workers and Justice

SATAWU remains unwavering in its mission to:

  • Defend workers’ rights
  • Expose corruption
  • Hold leadership accountable

We will not be intimidated or distracted. Victory is certain—SATAWU stands with the workers.
