G4S Secure Solutions Fails to Comply

01 February 2024

The South African Transport and Allied Workers Union (SATAWU) strongly condemns the continued disregard and disrespect shown by G4S Secure Solutions towards its employees, who are our valued members in the Private Security Sector.

It is deeply concerning that G4S no longer maintains any offices in Gauteng Province, which has historically been their stronghold. Previously, the company operated three offices in the province. Today, in 2024, they have none. For over a year, operations have been conducted informally—literally from the streets and under trees. This is unacceptable. Our members and workers deserve safe, dignified working conditions. Who should be expected to work from “one tree to another” every day?

G4S Secure Solutions, now part of Allied Universal, is one of the largest international security companies with a significant national footprint in South Africa’s GuardingCash-in-Transit, and Aviation divisions. There is no valid reason for the absence of proper offices in Gauteng. The company has the resources to secure suitable premises. Even the Thabo Bester saga did not cripple their operations or reputation.

SATAWU has engaged G4S repeatedly to resolve this matter and even offered assistance in finding office space. Our offer was rejected. It is clear that the company prioritises profit over worker welfare and security standards.

Our Position

SATAWU calls on G4S and Allied Universal to act responsibly and secure proper office facilities without delay. Failure to do so will leave the union with no choice but to:

  • Pursue legal action against the company.
  • Escalate the matter to the Department of Labour and the National Bargaining Council for the Private Security Sector.

We have exercised patience, but this ends now. If G4S fails to secure offices by 15 February 2024, SATAWU will formally request the intervention of Minister of Labour, Thulas Nxesi. That is the only language the company understands.
