The South African Transport and Allied Workers Union (SATAWU) wishes to inform its members, PRASA employees, and the media of the successful conclusion of the 2025/2026 wage negotiation process with the Passenger Rail Agency of South Africa (PRASA).

Following a nationwide mandatory consultation process, SATAWU—led by General Secretary Cde Jack Mazibuko—returned to the Commission for Conciliation, Mediation and Arbitration (CCMA) on 24 July 2025 to present feedback to PRASA management. We are pleased to report that the meeting was constructive and yielded positive results, with both parties reaching consensus in line with the mandate given by workers.

After a challenging negotiation period, SATAWU secured a 5.5% wage increase across the board, effective 1 August 2025, with back pay to be disbursed in September 2025. This agreement applies to all eligible employees in the bargaining unit, including fixed-term contract workers. Employees in the risk pool are excluded from this agreement.

Key highlights of the agreement include:

  • A one-year wage agreement with PRASA
  • No retrenchments during the agreement period
  • No strikes related to this wage increase
  • Protection of jobs in PRASA Corporate Office, PRASA Rail, PRASA Technical, and the Long Distance Passenger Division (formerly Autopax)

SATAWU also confirms that outstanding demands—such as night shift allowance and standby allowance—will be addressed in the upcoming bargaining forum.

We extend our gratitude to all PRASA workers and SATAWU members for their patience, unity, and support throughout this process. The union remains committed to defending workers’ rights and improving conditions across the transport sector.
